A collage of a person with long hair who is divided into two: the left side is wearing a military-style jacket while the right side is carrying a backpack and in student clothing. The person is shown from the back. Below, there are text snippets referencing affirmative action, particularly highlighting the military's exemption from its recent rollback. Bold typography spells "Affirmative Action," with dynamic angles and cutouts to emphasize disparities and exceptions in systemic rulings.

“I can die for this country, but I certainly can’t learn” | Affirmative Action in the US

“I can die for this country, but I certainly can’t learn”

This is a quote from Mary L. Tobin last year whilst on an episode of NPR’s podcast, Code Switch, where they discussed the banning of affirmative action at colleges and universities in the USA – with the exception of military academies.

We’re reminded of this quote over 1 year later after Trump’s threat to dismantle the US Department of Education.

Both of these stories share one key point; creating barriers to education – especially education for and about underrepresented communities – benefits those in power, and reinforces the systemic inequities we all navigate through.

Is it any wonder that the exit polls showed that the more educated one was, the more likely they were to vote Blue?
