White Saviour Stories Need to Stop Now

I recently read an article that should have been shocking, but wasn’t at all.

A quick summary of the article; “Retired NFL star Michael Oher, whose supposed adoption out of grinding poverty by a wealthy, white family was immortalized in the 2009 movie ‘The Blind Side’, petitioned a Tennessee court Monday with allegations that a central element of the story was a lie concocted by the family to enrich itself at his expense.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; it’s time Storytelling as an industry gets a lot braver and we start supporting stories from the underrepresented.

And by support, I mean publicly advocating for ? and financially investing in them! ?

We need to aggressively lean into narratives that are told from underrepresented communities.

Nothing about us, without us!

Enough is enough.
